Why do cats knead blankets?

Cats knead blankets because the motion began when they were nursing kittens. Pressing with their paws helped milk come, and many grown cats keep that baby habit because soft, warm places make them feel safe and settled. Comfort memory is the heart of it.
There is a second layer on those paws: scent glands leave the cat's smell behind as they press. So the blanket, or your lap, becomes a familiar patch of home. If claws appear, it is usually excitement, not a fight.
