Our voices sound different because each body shapes sound in its own way. Air makes the vocal folds vibrate, then the throat, mouth, nose, tongue, teeth, and lips change that buzz into a voice. Size, shape, and habit all help make someone recognizable.
A lovely detail is that two people can sing the same note and still sound unlike each other. The extra tones ringing inside the mouth and throat give a voice its timbre, the quality that lets a child know exactly who called from another room.
