Why do we have a belly button?

You have a belly button because you once had an umbilical cord attached there before birth. The cord carried oxygen and nutrients from the placenta to your growing body. After you were born and could breathe and feed, the cord was cut, leaving a small scar.
It is a quiet little record of the months before your first breath. Belly buttons look different because the healed skin can pull inward or rest outward, but each one marks the same old connection to the body that carried you.
