Soda fizzes because carbon dioxide gas has been squeezed into the drink while the can or bottle is sealed. When you open it, the pressure falls, and the gas can leave the liquid as bubbles. Less pressure means more fizz rushing upward.
Bubbles often begin on tiny rough places, such as a scratch, a dust speck, or the edge of an ice cube. Once one bubble starts, more gas joins it, it rises, and it pops at the top with that sharp sound kids lean close to hear.
Pour soda into two glasses, one with ice and one without, and compare where bubbles appear first.
