Why is frost sparkly?

Frost sparkles because damp air freezes onto cold grass, glass, or leaves as many smooth, flat ice crystals. Each one sits at its own angle, so sunlight ricochets off the surface and some of those bright flashes land in your eyes.
The fanciest kind, hoarfrost, forms when the night is cold and calm, giving crystals time to grow thin and neat. Move your face a little beside a frosty patch, and different crystals take turns flashing.
