Why is Venice built on water?

Venice was built in a lagoon because water made it harder for attackers to reach. Families escaping danger in northern Italy moved onto muddy islands where horses, carts, and large armies could not easily go. What began as shelter slowly became a city.

To keep buildings from sinking, Venetians packed long wooden stakes into the wet ground and built stone bases above them. Underwater, the timber lasts because decay needs air. That hidden forest still helps hold up palaces, bridges, and homes.
