Why was the Statue of Liberty built?

The Statue of Liberty was built as a gift from France to the United States, honoring liberty and the friendship between the two countries. French supporters made the statue, while Americans raised money for the base. Its torch and tablet were meant to speak clearly about freedom.
It was also a feat of engineering. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the figure, and Gustave Eiffel helped create the metal support inside. Thin copper pieces formed the outside, then the huge statue crossed the Atlantic in crates before being reassembled in New York Harbor.
